I absolutely love getting outside this time of the year, especially for a day on a working farm picking crisp apples and choosing the perfect pumpkins. I have compiled a list of the best apple and pumpkin picking close to Hoboken and JC.

Demarest Farms wins for the closest place to satisfy your apple picking yen at just 35 minutes away.  More than 14 varieties of pick-your-own apples including Cameo, Cortland, Empire, Fuji, Gala, Gold Rush, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, Liberty, Macintosh, Mutsu (Crispin), Red Delicious, SunCrisp and Winesap. Open Monday thru Friday from 3 – 4:30pm and weekends from 10am – 4:30pm, the $5 admission fee includes petting farm animals, a hayride, and a corn maze. Apples are $9 a bag (each bag holds approximately 10 lbs!) and $9 for any size pumpkin (pumpkin picking starts 9/17)! Stop by their farm store and garden center for delicious farm fresh pies, ice cream and cider donuts as well as beautiful fall plants.

Demarest Farms 244 Wierimus Road, Hillsdale

A close second is Ripple Hill Farm, just 40 minutes away.  If you don’t want to travel far, this is your best option. They offer pick-your-own apples on Sundays through October. Pumpkins become available in October and they have them available at the farm stand for purchase. Hours are generally Sundays from noon – 4pm, but call before you go to confirm.

Ripple Hill Farm 181 Mountain Road, Oldwick

Melick’s Town Farm in Oldwick is just 45 minutes from Hoboken and Jersey City with  two other locations a bit further away in Bridgewater and Califon. The Oldwick farm has over 20,000 trees and offers 24 varieties of pick-your-own apples including Pink Lady, Macoun and Red Free. Apples are $1.59 per pound when you pick more than 10 pounds. Be sure to make time to stop by their Cider Mill for delicious fresh apple cider. Pumpkin picking is available at their Califon location, but  pumpkins are available for sale at all of their farm locations.  They also have a nice selection of mums, Indian Corn, hay bales, and corn shucks for your Fall decorating.The Oldwick farm is open 7 days a week from 9am – 6pm.

Melick’s Town Farm 170 Oldwick Road, Whitehouse Station

Alstede Farms is just under an hour away but SO worth the drive! A full day of activities for families looking for a day of fall fun. You can pick apples 7 days a week from 9am – 6pm. Family-friendly offerings like free pull wagons to transport your harvest from the fields and a complimentary hayride trip to the picking fields and orchards make this farm worth the drive. Pick-your-own admission is $7.99 per person and free for children under 2. Admission includes  a $2 coupon toward your purchase. Visit Tuesday or Wednesday from 9am – 1pm and admission is free! Over 40 varieties of apples are grown here- call the farm to see which apples are available when you plan to visit.  You can also pick tomatoes, flowers, eggplant, peppers, string beans and more. Fall Family Fun Days offer entertainment on weekends, consult their calendar of events for dates and more information.

Alstede Farms 1 Alstede Farms Lane, Chester

Terhune Orchards is a Fall family favorite! Even at an hour and fifteen minute drive it’s essential to make a trip out here every year for apple and pumpkin picking and to enjoy their Fall Family Fun Weekends. Sixteen varieties of apples can be found around the corner on Van Kirk Road. Pumpkin picking is available at the main location on Cold Soil Road. Weekends through October 29, Enjoy live music, pony rides, rubber duck races, a hay bale maze, much more! More than cider donuts here! enjoy pulled pork sandwiches, homemade salads and delicious desserts. While the farm store, pumpkin display and the winery are free to enter, the festival area admission is $8 person, free for children under 3.
