Saturday September 16 11:00 AM- 5:00 PM Young explorers can dive into the world of marine science at Hudson River Park’s NYC marine science festival SUBMERGE at Pier 26. Kids of all ages will love meeting real scientists and learning more about things like oysters, underwater robots, horseshoe crabs, knot-tying, whales, pollution and plankton (just to name a few). There are also live scuba dives, kayaking opportunities, fishing opportunities and boat tours—even a River Ranger Kid Zone where tykes can meet live animals and get involved with hands-on activities!
Saturday September 16 7:00 pm The Ultimate in Girl Power- Roller Derby! Meet the Jerzey Derby Brigade and have some fun! The whistle blows at 7:00 pm at their home arena Inline Morristown. Home game tickets available here.
Saturday September 16 from 12:00PM-8:00 pm The 7th Annual All About Downtown Street Fair returns to Jersey City with over 250+ unique vendors from The Grove Path Plaza all the way to Coles Street! Enjoy the kid’s area at First Street packed with rides, face painting, games and shops for the little ones. as well as live music throughout the day.
Saturday + Sunday September 16 + 17 It’s a bird, it’s a cat, it’s a — mummy! Come dig up secrets from the past with this special exhibit on the world of Ancient Egypt’s mummified animals at the Brooklyn Museum. Examine real mummy snakes, birds, cats, and more up close, then view CT scans of life beneath the wrappings. Some of the mummies even date back as early as 3000 B.C.E! Young historians will love learning about the important roles animals played in both the natural and supernatural worlds. Recommended for ages 9 and up. Children under 19 FREE

Sunday September 17 1:00 PM-4:00 PM The ultimate car show is taking place at the Edison Museum in West Orange. In addition to a tour of Edison’s collection of traditional and electric powered cars you can view the “Invention Factory” a 20 minute orientation film as well as “The Great Train Robbery” a silent film from 1903 and tour the labs where Edison conducted his historic experiments with electricity, sound and film. Head to Jersey City and 2017 Chili Cook-off and Mac & Cheese Showdown Extravaganza and Homebrew Festival benefitting 4th Street Arts Enjoy unlimited samples of the best Chili and Mac & Cheese recipes from restaurants around Jersey City as well as the best from individual chefs and foodies as well. Additionally, The Jersey City Homebrew Club, will be Curating and Creating, from scratch, a special Beer Sampling just for this event.
Sunday September 17 11:00 Am- 3:00 PM Take a hike! Fall is a time for change at the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum in Short Hills. Take a guided hike with the Arboretum’s Teen Volunteers as they tell you about their ongoing Citizen Science Projects, how they impact conservation in our community, and how you can become a citizen scientist with the Arboretum. This Sunday’s hike will focus on Migration! Hikes will last about 45 minutes. Hikes depart at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm Price: Member: $5 Non-Member: $10

Sunday September 17 2:00 PM- 4:00 PM Drop in for family fun at the Rubin Museum of Art at free family Sunday and play with your food. Make sculptures out of sugar and spice, inspired by chalimidi, a sweet rice flour dish made during the Hindu festival Vinayaka Chaturthi. During this early September festival, chalimidi is offered to one of the most popular Hindu deities, Ganesha, the elephant-headed “Remover of Obstacles.” Try to spot him holding a bowl of sweets in the Museum’s galleries.
