Thanksgiving edition

With the holiday madness gone let’s keep the cabin fever at bay with some great activities to get the family out of the house and active. There is local ice skating, snow tubing and skiing close-by as well as the great activities below:

Saturday January 6th 10:00 AM-12:00 PM Turn trash into crafts at Liberty State Park in Jersey City and think twice before throwing away that egg carton or toilet paper tube. Join them for this fun, hands-on workshop and learn how to re-purpose common household items into unique crafts. Please meet at the Information Desk located inside the CRRNJ Terminal building at 1 Audrey Zapp Drive. Saturday January 6th 3:00 PM-4:00 PM  (45 minutes from Hoboken and Jersey City) Baby it’s cold out- so how does all our wildlife survive? Join an Environmental Educator at the Tenafly Nature Center to explore the various methods animals use to survive the cold winter months. See and feel real fur, discover how blubber works and meet some live animals to better understand the adaptions that have developed for survival. Program is intended for adults and families with children 5 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held under cover. Space is limited and pre-registration is recommended.

Saturday & Sunday January 6th & 7th showtimes vary (1 hour from Hoboken and Jersey City) Visit the NY Botanical Gardens for the last few weeks of the show and exhibit- in addition to the phenomenal NYC themed train show you can enjoy the 30 minute Thomas and Friends show. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet the Really Useful Engine and get your photo taken. Join Thomas on a fun-filled, sing-along performance, Thomas’ Budding Adventure, where kids will help Thomas discover the steps to grow a beautiful garden! Be sure to bring your camera to capture the special day.

Saturday & Sunday January 6th & 7th 1:00 PM- 4:00 PM (1 hour from Hoboken and Jersey City) LAST CHANCE to visit the 60th Annual Model Railroad Show from the Garden State Model Railway Club. The 1,200 square foot HO layout features steam and diesel locomotives, Thomas and Friends, numerous freight and passenger trains, rural and urban scenes, and working signals.

Saturday & Sunday January 6th & 7th (33 minutes from Hoboken and Jersey City)  LAST CHANCE An extraordinary collection of rarely-seen mummies closes Sunday at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. The Mummies Show offers an up-close look at one of the largest collections of mummies housed in North America. From ancient Egypt to pre-Columbian Peru. With the aid of modern techniques like high-resolution CT scans and forensically reconstructed sculptures, visitors will glimpse people from centuries ago and learn how contemporary scientists have gleaned stunning details about their ages, practices, and even their causes of death. The exhibition will let visitors: • discover how modern technology has transformed the study of mummification • virtually peer inside mummies at interactive touch tables • handle 3D-printed figurines of burial goods that were encased within mummy wrappings for millennia and only recently revealed.

Saturday & Sunday January 6th & 7th (45 minutes from Hoboken and Jersey City) LAST CHANCE for Disney on Ice at the Prudential Center in Newark Unleash the magic with royal sisters Anna and Elsa and the hilarious snowman, Olaf, as they sing captivating songs like “Let it Go” and “In Summer.” Life is the bubbles when Sebastian strikes up his hot crustacean band and the Daughters of Triton make a splash as they introduce Ariel in an ‘80s pop montage.  Relive a tale as old as time when Belle opens her heart to new adventures as the Beast’s enchanted objects take center stage for a dazzling skating spectacle.

Sunday January 7th 1:00 PM-4:30 PM (1 hour from Hoboken & Jersey City) Head to Pyramid Mountain in Montville for an afternoon of guided snowshoeing and trekking through the winter landscape. Look for signs of wildlife, and view beautiful scenery – all while getting a great workout! No experience necessary. If you already know how to snowshoe or want to venture out on your own, there are various sizes, including children’s, available for one-day rental and use at Pyramid Mountain NHA. Ages 10 and up – must be 18 years or older to rent shoes. Shoes can be rented between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., and must be returned between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. the same day. $5 per person for trek, $15 for trek and snowshoe rental.
