With rain in the forecast for Saturday and October starting on SUNDAY (wow that went fast) we thought you’d need some cool things to do- from giving back with Mommies Heart2Heart, to Cider Hot Dogs (yes it’s a thing!) TWO pumpkin train events and the hot, hot, hot chili pepper fest we’ve got things to DO this weekend 9/30 + 10/1.
Saturday 9/30 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM Compassion is a skill best learned early! Teach your child to care for the elderly at St. Ann’s Home in Jersey City with Mommies Heart to Heart. There will be painting for the children and elderly to enjoy! Feel free to bring a baked good or handmade card/craft to share with the folks. Saturday 9/30 6:45 PM to 9:00 PM For a historic Halloween head to Dinosaurs After Dark, the Field Station’s spooky, funny and, yes, educational nighttime adventure. Join this fun-filled night of chills, laughs and music as we explore the park by lantern light, hunt in the darkened woods for an escaped T-rex and sing our fears away with the Dinosaur Troubadour. Saturday 9/30 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM If you are on your way to—or from—Hacklebarney State Park, with it’s glorious waterfalls and abundant wildlife, you have to stop at Hacklebarney Farm Cider Mill. Locals arrive early to get in line for the farm bakery that is famous for its pies, apple logs and dumplings. Watch the cider being pressed at about noon on Saturdays, then visit the corn maze, pick your own pumpkin and then head to the bakery. Kids will love the cider hot dogs that are cooked in cider and served with…cider kraut.
Saturday and Sunday 9/30 & 10/1 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Head over to Madison and the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts for SPARK! The Explosive and Dirty History of Light illuminates the 18th and 19th century experience with light, and tells the story of the dirty and sometimes explosive fuels that created that light. It also explores the early electrical experiments that eventually led us to the safe and clean lighting of the 21st century.
Saturday and Sunday 9/30 & 10/1 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM Celebrate silly, not-too-spooky fun at The Count’s Halloween Spooktacular at Sesame Place. Enjoy three special Halloween-themed shows, soar, swing, fly and cruise on four Count von Count-themed mechanical rides, and see everyone’s favorite furry friends dressed up in costume! The Neighborhood Street Party Halloween Parade features ten fantastic floats all decked out for the season with music and dancing. Stay until 8PM every Saturday during Spooktacular to see the special night time version of the parade – the sky will light up with not-too-spooky Halloween-colored lighting!

Catch the Black River Railroad Pumpkin Express at Pumpkin Junction at the station in Flemington ( allow about 2 hours for your visit). Your train ticket includes your round-trip steam train ride and these activities at Everitt Farms: 6 acre ice-cream cone shaped corn maze. Tractor-pulled wagon ride. Petting zoo. Kids’ corn box play area. Scarecrow display. Hay bale maze for smaller children. Music / DJ and games. Farm equipment display. Sunday October 1 10:30-12:30 Join Origami USA at the Museum of Natural History for classes in Origami! These classes are offered for families (starting at age 5) all the way to adults. The classes take place in the museum throughout the day and range in price from $20 for members to $35 for non members. Loads of fun and a skill that children can use to entertain themselves with a simple piece of paper!
Sunday October 1 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Bubble Fest returns to Jersey City Heights just before the weather changes! Bring your family to the Farmers Market at Riverview Fisk Park for hours of bubble fun, Fall related activities for kids AND an Apple Dessert Contest! Sunday October 1 12:30 PM to 5 :00 PM Celebrate the Fall Harvest and the Season of the Witch at the Whippany Train Museum with train rides and a Halloween crafts/vendor fair. Celebrate the wonders of the Fall season at the 17th Annual “Pumpkin Festival. Walk among the pumpkins, corn shocks and grinning scarecrows. Enjoy the wares of local craft vendors at the “Pumpkin Market Place Crafts Fair”. The “Pumpkinliner” train stops at the Hanover Township Central Park where you can enjoy the “all aboard for wellness” events and activities, all included with the purchase of your “Pumpkinliner” ticket
Sunday October 1 10:00 AM- 6:00 PM Is it hot enough? Adventurous eaters descend upon the Chile Pepper festival at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, where taste-testing is reserved for the brave. Try some artisanal spicy snacks and desserts featuring products exclusively created for the festival from hot sauces to chile chocolates. While you nosh take the sizzling tunes from the likes of Battle of Santiago, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Ladama, Red Baraat, and Mariachi Tapatio de Alvaro Paulino. There will also be a pop-up workshop for kiddos, “Hot Chiles for Cool Kids” in the Discovery Garden where children pot their own pepper to take home.
Sunday October 1 11:30 AM- 6:00 PM Time-travel back to the Middle Ages and enjoy its ancient forms of fun. Wandering Fort Tryon Park in NYC’s lush grounds, families can rub shoulders with performers and festivalgoers dressed in clothing typical of the era, listen to authentic period music, and watch the antics of jugglers and jesters. Don’t miss the Cloisters Museum in the park and the amazing Unicorn Tapestries and beautiful architecture and gardens.
