With summer camps dwindling down the last few weeks of summer with the kids may not find you in Maine, on the shore or in the Hamptons. We’ve come up with a list of local fun to enjoy all the great stuff to do with kids within a 3 mile radius!

Play all day in the new Pop-Up Park at 12th and Adams with great features like tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, a playground, spray water feature, bocce ball court, bouldering and rock climbing wall, a running/walking course with fitness stations, a community garden, shade structures, BBQ grills, and picnic tables, life-size checkers/chess and surface games, shade trees, Adirondack and lounge chairs. The park now covers 4 acres, soon to be extended to 5.4 acres to become the largest park in Hoboken.

Kayak on the Hudson at the Hoboken Cove Boathouse  (see website for schedule) Kayaking programs take place close to shore, at the Maxwell Place beach. Programs are free.  Kids under 16 must paddle with a parent or an adult over 18. Small children may go out with a parent.  They supply the kayaks, paddles, assistance out on the water and life jackets. It is first come first serve with a paddle limit of about 20 minutes when it’s busy. Don’t forget your sunscreen!

Hit the Beaches of NJ-Jersey City that is – start with brunch seaside at Surf City – after 9 pm it’s adults only but brunch allows you and the kids a waterside brunch with a sand beach. The food selections include everything from Lobster Quesadillas and Clam Chowder to Mahi Mahi Burgers and Snow Crab Legs. For additional beach time hit the Newport Green and enjoy the sand, swings, slide and take a ride on the carousel. For extra fun, visit the Lefrak Point Lighthouse just steps from the Newport PATH station.

Take a ride on the ferry with NY Waterway- Kids under the age of 12 ride free on NY Waterway ferries all summer between New Jersey and Manhattan now through Labor Day, September 4th. This offer is valid on all NY Waterway ferries including Hoboken, Jersey City, Weehawken and Edgewater.

Summer is all about ice cream- soft serve, hard-packed or sorbet Jersey City is home to the 2 best ice cream shops in Hudson County according to NJ.com. Torico’s is a Jersey City institution offering more than 65 flavors all made at the shop (Strawberry, Banana and Peach flavors feature local fruits and are often sold out) While Torico’s owns old school charm (and amazing ice cream cakes) a close 2nd is Milk, Sugar, Love just a few blocks away. They churn delicious ice cream made from organic milk and cream and all the best New Jersey produce. Why choose- 2 scoops please!

If the weather isn’c cooperating, go ninja! Hudson Play in Jersey City  offers older kids an opportunity to try their hands at a challenging four-lane ninja course, which tests their strength and endurance with swinging beams, ropes ladders, and a warped climbing wall. The fun at HudsonPLAY isn’t just for big kids! The facility also features an interactive play area for toddlers and miniature obstacle courses and climbing challenges for kids aged 5 and up. Admission can get pricey but we found a Groupon offer to save you up to 55%!

Get Wet! Dangling just over Hoboken is Firefighter’s Park in Union City which offers an Olympic-sized pool as well as a funky spray park for littles. Don’t let rain spoil your swim- check out the no-frills, but clean indoor pool at Pershing Field (day rate is just $3 and they offer swim and scuba lessons as well) or Hamilton Health and Fitness which allows non-members to swim for a $30day rate.
